3 tapes
One of my earliest memories of owning music were 3 tapes I found in my uncle's room...around the time I was around 8 years old I think. A "best of Beatles", a "best of John Denver" and another weird looking tape bearing the title "Sultans of Swing". I thought this last one was too stupid a name for a set of songs to have and the name Dire Straits denoted a singular lack of appeal to me. (aah how I still regret the day I threw that tape away...I was to wait many years after that to be delivered to musical nirvana by Mr. Knopfler). However John Denver became a daily listen for me. I found his songs free, fascinating, light, easy...a sense of tune infused into feelings of love...for nature, for family. I didn't know where Aspen was but it became a magical place for me. I began reading about the Rocky mountains too. And intently dug out information about Colorado. Somehow I missed out one of his songs and just as well. Sometimes you find things when they're meant to be found, as I did with this piece of musical poetry by the late & great man.
Looking for space by John Denver
On the road of experience
Im trying to find my own way
Sometimes I wish that I could fly away
When I think that Im moving
Suddenly things stand still
Im afraid cause I think they always will
And Im looking for space
And to find out who I am
And Im looking to know and understand
Its a sweet sweet dream
Sometimes Im almost there
Sometimes I fly like an eagle and
Sometimes Im deep in despair
All alone in the universe
Sometimes thats how it seems
I get lost in the sadness and the screams
Then I look in the centre
Suddenly everythings clear
I find myself in the sunshine and my dreams
And Im looking for space
And to find out who I am
And Im looking to know and understand
Its a sweet sweet dream
Sometimes Im almost there
Sometimes I fly like an eagle and
Sometimes Im deep in despair
On the road of experience
Join in the living day
If theres an answer
Its just that its just that way
