Living
Leo Rosten, I have recently understood was an American teacher, academic & humorist. I have never stumbled upon Mr. Rosten's works before but I did stumble across Sarah's blog where this quote by the gent is prominently displayed:
"I cannot believe that the purpose of life is to be happy. I think the purpose of life is to be useful, to be responsible, to be compassionate. It is, above all to matter, to count, to stand for something, to have made some difference that you lived at all"
He must have been one cracker of a teacher.

10 Comments:
He's an idiot if he thinks these are necessarily mutually exclusive. One has to derive happiness from being useful, responsible etc
Anology (slightly abstract) from the NGO world: you can be doing the best of deeds but unless there is a business model where everyone benefits then it will never be sustainable.
The trick is in learning to derive happiness/money from the good deeds.
Hmmm, that's pretty much what he's saying...in crude terms: don't be happy to work and go back to your telly but do something beyond impacting the business of your local liquor store & doughnut shop, I think is his message. :-)
"I cannot believe that the purpose of life is to be happy. I think the purpose of life is to be useful ... "
I think it should've read:
"I believe that the purpose of life is to be happy while being useful ... "
Or maybe I'm missing something due to recent drastic changes in lifestyle ;-)
The purpose of life is to drink many different kinds of beer.
He who drinks the most beer wins.
Beer rules!
The purpose of life is captured in the essence of blogging:
- Brag about your travels
- Get more hits
It's all about the hits. He who gets the most hits wins.
My hit counter tells me I'm winning. I'm a winner!
Aah...wise words from the true nomad himself...that's experience talking right there! :-)
